Description of Entropion.
The word Entropion comes from the Greek word ektropion from ektrepein to turn out ( ex meaning out and trepein to turn). Entropion is the inversion, or turning inward, of the border of the eyelid against the eyeball.
Symptoms of Entropion.
Entropion is marked by the eye being partially held shut with excessive tearing and squinting. The lashes rub against the eye which often has a red and sore appearance. Your dog may be sensitive to light and may rub at its eyes. Both eyes are usually affected simultaneously.
Dogs susceptible to Entropion.
All breeds can be affected but studies have shown that the following breeds are the most susceptible:
Bloodhound
Bulldog
Chow Chow
Mastiff
Retriever
Rottweiler
Shar Pei
Entropion Causes.
Entropion is usually due to: an inherited faulty eyelid conformation that manifests in young adult dogs. Breed related entropion usually affects dogs under 1 year of age. This hereditary disorder was due to selective breeding to create exaggerated facial features with prominent eyes and/or heavy facial folds.
Inherited faulty eyelid.
Due to an eyelid spasm as a result of another painful eye condition.
Treatment of Entropion.
The treatment of Entropion is by surgical correction. This surgery involves removing a small portion of the skin to tighten the eyelid which is usually undertaken when the dog is an adult since its facial structures are still growing and changing.
