Description of Canine Enteritis
The word Enteritis relates to the disease in domestic animals and is the inflammation of the intestines, especially of the small intestine. Canine Enteritis is precipitated by diarrhea, the abnormally fast passing of waste material through the large intestine, resulting in frequent defecation with loose feces and sometimes cramps. If diarrhea progresses to canine enteritis a Veterinary Surgeon should be consulted.

Symptoms of Canine Enteritis
Canine Enteritis is marked by blood stained diarrhea and serious vomiting.

Dogs Susceptible to Canine Enteritis
No particular breed is particularly susceptible.

Treatment of Canine Enteritis
Ensure that the dog is rested from any food or large amounts of water so that the intestinal tract can ease and settle down and seek advice from a Veterinary Surgeon.

When to Consult the Veterinary Surgeon
Canine Enteritis can be serious and a Veterinary Surgeon should be consulted if any of the following conditions apply or as the owner you are instinctively concerned about the health of your dog:

  • Condition has lasted for more than 24 hours
  • The dog shows signs of pain, breathing difficulties or signs of another illness or symptoms such as vomiting
  • Blood in the diarrhea
  • Diarrhea accompanied by vomiting
