Description of Dog Mange
The word Mange comes from the Middle French word mangene meaning itching. It is caused by six varieties of minute parasitic mites which affect domestic animals and sometimes people. The most severe variety of canine dog mange is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which also causes human scabies. It appears in the form of a variety of persistent contagious skin diseases characterized by frantic itching.

Types of Dog Mange

  • Canine or Dog Mange fall into three distinct types:
  • Demodectic Mange - also known as Red Mange
  • Cheyletiella Mange - also known as Walking Dandruff
  • Sarcoptic Mange also known as Scabies
  • Symptoms of Dog Mange
Canine Dog Mange is marked by inflammation, frantic itching, thickening of the skin, and hair loss.

    Demodectic Mange or Red Mange
The Dog Mange called Demodectic mange is caused by Demodex canis, a minute size, cigar shaped mite that affects puppies from three to 12 months old.

This type of canine dog mange causes itching, the skin is reddened and scaly, and hair loss occurs in circular patches resembling ‘ringworm.’ The face and front legs are most commonly affected. The treatment includes dips of an insecticide called Mitaban preceded by hair clipping and benzoyl peroxide shampoo

    Cheyletiella Mange or Walking Dandruff
The Dog Mange called Cheyletiella mange also known as Walking Dandruff. It affects puppies and is caused by a large reddish mite. This mange is identified by the dandruff dusting that occurs over the dog's head, neck, and back. The treatment is an insecticide dip.

    Sarcoptic Mange or Scabiesis
This is caused by a microscopic mite. Sarcoptic mange is contagious to both canines and people and causes intense itching, loss of hair and crusting of the skin.

A dog’s ears, front legs, chest and abdomen are most often affected by this particular type of mange. The treatment usually consists of weekly injections of Ivermectin for up to four weeks.
